I recently tried to reinstall Windows 98 after rebooting it tells me that a file is missing and need to reinstall windows and the pc switched off by itself. I need to access the cd rom to reinstall windows but it will only allow me to access in safe mode

a Win98 startup floppy?

Insert the floppy in the A drive, and boot the machine. Then you can select the option to install Windows from the CD ROM.

Alternatively, go into your BIOS as the computer boots - often by pressing the delete key - and alter the boot sequence so that the CD ROM is the first drive in the list. Put the CD in the drive and reboot.

Have you tried running the system file checker in the tools

Just to follow on from the F.E. If you enter the bios, pick advanced bios settings. You will find boot sequence there.
