I am running windows xp and have anti virus and spyware installed but I am getting messagres in my inbox saying that mail could not be delivered. I am not sending the mail in the first place. Can anyone advise

just set up to block/bounce the sender, its possibly someone trying to see if your email address is legit, don't reply as they will then have your email address for what ever pupose

It's quite a common problem, caused by spyware or similar on someone else's computer - that someone else will be unaware of it, but has a connection to your email address perhaps via yet another person's email.
As conrail says, just ignore it. Don't bounce because depending on the method, that can reveal that you exist. And you probably can't block because they will all be from different senders. After a while it will stop provided you don't open any and don't reply. You have got your preview pane turned off, haven't you?
