Blue screen when trying to load Dell laptop

Laptop is about 3 years old and has been working okay. I tried to turn it on yesterday and got a blue screen saying "unsurmountable boot volume". It suggested I restart if this was the first time it had happened or press F8 if it wasn't. I have seen this screen in the past (not v often) and been able to restart with no problem. This time I got the blue screen with same message each time I tried to restart and could not press F8 or do anyting else as it would not respond.

Any advice? I am not very technically minded and wondered whether its worth taking it to a laptop place?

Sounds like a damaged hard drive that can't be read by the BIOS or, less likely as it's a laptop, a damaged cable.

Do you have any boot cds?
