Try checking your drive for disk errors - Boot into safe mode with command prompt - then type chkdsk /f/r

Hi, thanks for your reply. I cant boot to safe mode, get the same message. Dont really want to go down the recovery route unless I have to. I have 2 hard drives in this machine and I can boot OK from the other one, dont know if this gives any other options.

Hi again, I expect I can fix this from a back up or restore if needs be. What puzzles me is what caused it in the first place, Why start Ok everyday and then suddenly blue screen. I noticed about
2weeks back that the time and date was always wrong ie 2001 or 2002. easy to sort out but I had to do it every day.Relevent or not? Few problems in the past until I let others use it. Any comments?

Cmos battery dead. You'll need to replace the battery on the motheboard, time and date not up to date on the bios.

Thanks rdave, who would have thought of that but now you come to mention it yeah that sounds like a good idea to at least fix the clock. Had it been my alarm clock I would have done it the same day but being a computer it did not cross my mind. Easy to overlook the obvious sometimes.
