Blue screen "hardware error" on startup

I have a machine that wont start properly. It gets as far as the XP splashscreen, and then a blue screen flashes up momentarily and the machine tries to restart and repeats the above process. From what I can make out in the millisecond I see it for, the bluw screen is reporting some kind of hardware defect. Any ideas appreciated please!

Have you tried hitting F8?

Yes, trying safe mode does not make a difference, the machine runs through the same circle of restarting itself after the blue error screen. Thanks for the response anyway.

I have had similar, go into the BIOS and turn OFF Plug and Play then re-boot. You might find the fault is corrupt graphics card drivers.

To get into the bios press the Del key when the first screen appears.
