Blue screen of Death

I have been trying to reformat my HD from WINME to 2K OR XP but the following keeps happening :

A blue screen appears stating :
A problem has detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to yor computer.

blah, blah, blah

Check for adequate disk space.If a driver is identified (which it is not) disable the driver or check for updates. Ty changing Video adapters.

Check for BIOS updates blah, blah, blah

Blue screens are a function of Windows ergo, you must have Windows open for this to appear. You cannot format a disk which is itself being used by Windows.

You format either from a bootup floppy or, with W2K or XP, from the O/S disk. Either way it is done before Windows loads.
