Blackberry help

I am showing my total ignorance here of these devices.
If I decide to buy such a device from say Ebay, particularly because I want 'email on the move' capacity firstly do I have to enter into a contract with e.g. Orange or Vodaphone or can I do 'pay and go' and if so do I just ask them to connect?
Secondly would (e.g.)Orange then be the ISP and can I still use my hotmail address for emails?
Also when I see on ebay that the device is 'unlocked' is this good or bad?
Information would be appreciated
