i run xp home with sp2. when i start up in 'safe mode' i get a black and white screen without icons and the words 'safe mode' in the bottom corners and nothing else. why?

which one of these are you choosing for Safe Mode?

Safe Mode: Diagnostic Mode: No CD-ROM or Network capabilities.

Safe Mode with Networking: Diagnostic mode that supports networking and internet access.

Safe Mode with Command Prompt: Brings the computer to a DOS prompt.

Step By Step Confirmation: Allows the Administrator to monitor the loading of the operating system step by step. For Troubleshooting boot problems.

""safe mode with command prompt""

Hi birddog, if you choose the command prompt safe mode you will have a black & white screen because you are in the DOS (cmd) window. This is normal.

choose 'Safe Mode with Networking' to get to your desktop in Windows

with good wishes, lotvic
