Black square on screen

Whenever I point my mouse at the open field on my monitor when Word or Excel is open, it turns into a solid one-inch black square. But if I move the mouse to a toolbar or otherwise outside the main field it reverts to the usual arrow. This happens only in Word and Excel, so far as I can find. This suddenly started seemingly without any change to any setting on my part. How can I get rid of it?

Control Panel > Mouse > Pointers > Scheme > Chose a different Scheme > Apply > Reboot your PC > Control Panel > Mouse > Pointers > Scheme > Return to your original Scheme > Apply.

Good luck!

Could it be a chart area in excel with a black fill that has somehow stuck. Try edit and clear all.

Thanks, both, but unfortunately neither fix makes any difference.

Try Detect and Repair on the Help menu in Word or Excel (Office 2000 or later).

Thks, VoG, but this doesn't do the trick either. But I've just established that the black square appears at times in PaintShop Pro as well!?

For info, I've found the solution. Rt click Desktop, click Properties, Settings, Advanced, Troubleshoot tab. Adjust "Hardware acceleration" down fron "Full" to half-way. Bingo, no black square!
