ever since ive had my laptop the screen has a habit of going completely black. the system is still running as i can here sound still. its as though someone has turned off the monitor/screen.

like i say it has happened since the beginning so i dont think its a virus, plus i run a virus checker on a regular basis.

any suggestions.....

I've got the same problem with my Dell Latitude. The screen goes off after about 30secs when it's running on mains but when on battery alone it runs OK until the battery runs out. I think it's putting itself into standby for some reason on mains, but it won't come back until I re-boot. Any ideas anyone??

Thanks Rawprawn. Re-installed display drivers, unfortunately no improvement.

check power settings (set to never) and screen saver settings (no screen saver)

possibly defective inverter capacitors (higher mains voltage causes failure)

How about having a look at Power Options in Control Panel.

Can be a loose connection from the display to the mobo. Might need a bit of dismantling - good source of manuals click here
