Black border around laptop display

  s99Raj 18:07 24 Sep 05

I have a Compaq Armada 7400 laptop onto which I have loaded Windows 98. The problem now is that there is a black border around the entire main window taking up most of the laptops screen area.

Any ideas on how I can get rid of this please?

With my laptop,I had exactly the same thing. It vanished from the desktop when I installed the correct driver for the graphics. The black border is still evident around the screen during boot, but I cured that with a combo of "Fn" + F8 keys,I would presume yours has a similar facility.

When did you use Fn + F8 ?

as chegs says, you need to install the graphics driver, at the moment you will be defaulted to 640x480 screen size, once the correct drivers are installed you should be on 800x600 or higher.

if after the install you are still suffering this problem, right click and choose properties, then settings tab (windows xp), change the screen size to 800x600 and the black bar should go, if you want you could go higher 1024x768 in medium or high quality.

OK - thanks.

I'll try downloading the drivers and see what happens....

"When did you use Fn + F8 ? "

Whilst the 98se boot screen was showing.

No - it doesn't work. I've downloaded and installed the drivers.

Fn+F8 just brings up a small square containing a picture of how much battery power is left.

And I can't change the screen size from 640 by 480 pixels - there are no other options.

"And I can't change the screen size from 640 by 480 pixels" is a sure sign you haven't got the right driver for the laptops graphics.

When you get the right driver, you will find the "Fn" key + F# will give you various options(such as battery power, etc)
