Bizzare file browsing issues - WinXP SP2

My friend is having a problem using the options in the right hand column of the XP 'style' start menu. They can only get the computer to respond to the 'run' option. The biggest issue is that neither 'my computer' or 'my documents' will open when double clicked. As a result the only way that seems to allow access to files is to go via an application such as Word or Excel.

How can I help my friend to get the functionality of their ' my computer' viewer?? Would a system restore work, or is there a known virus that causes such behaviour. The computer runs Windows XP with Panda antivirus and firewall.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, yes, I would try a System Restore.

Hi, Technotiger.

Unfortuately the system restore has not worked, despite being restored to a time when the computer was known to work perfectly. My friend thinks it is a worm that is preventing certain actions from taking place. Does anyone know of a worm that is known to do this?

The anti-virus claims to be up to date but does not find anything. Has the worm disabled the anti-virus.

Your further suggestions are welcomed.
