Big Problems Writing CDs ...

I have major problems burning CDs ... though sometimes they work, it's very confusing & frustrating !!!

I was using WinXP's own write option but have since installed NERO 7 as I read that it gives a good log as to what is wrong ... hopefully somebody here can understand it, I've pasted some of it below ...

My PC is home built, running WinXP with all the latest updates and fixes, it's got 1 Gb RAM and has an 1800+ Athlon CPU. The drive in question is a TOSHIBA CD/DVDW SDR5372V. I have been using Samsung CDs and this particular problem occurred when using a Maxell CD-R 80PR ... it's not as if I'm using Mickey Mouse CDs that I bought at a car boot sale !!!

Anyway, the log :

I had a similar thing happen with Nero 6,it was on and off,in the end i ended up buying a new drive and it sorted it out,i would guess, and only "guess" that your drive is on its way out.

You could try different media and see if this helps, does the drive make a vibrating sound when you try to copy?,if it does then it may be the bearings have started to wear.

  ACOLYTE 15:23 28 Mar 06

I should add that when i had this problem i did a lot of searching the net for "could not perform fixation" errors and most of the site's said it was because the drive couldn't spin up to writing speed that was selected so it aborts the copy with this error, most pages suggested lowering the write speed to the lowest possible
and i tried this and it did work for a while, but as i was only delaying the inevitable i decided it was best to get a new drive.

This is just my story though as i said I'm only "guessing" in your case.

Determine maximum speed : TRUE

Burn at a slower rate than maximum

I rarely burn at greater than x4

Do not try to do other things on the PC whle burning close all other programs and disconnect from the net.

Programs looking for updates while your burning always seem to cause fatal errors to a disc.

... it certainly shouldn't be a case of the drive wearing out or breaking down, as it's (almost) brand new. It's been in the PC for about 8 months, but I've only been using it to burn in the past month & the very first time it worked, since then it's been hit & miss !!!

I never have anything else running and I always make sure all other users are logged off ... BUT, I do have anti-spyware & anti-virus programs running all the time and various programs check for updates ... maybe I should disconnect from the ADSL & close all those programs before I burn ... bloody ridiculous if that's the case !!!

May sound to obvious but are your cd's formatted.

  Heefie 17:15 28 Mar 06

I've never formatted a CD before ... HDDs & Floppies, yes, but never a CD ... and don't forget that sometimes these burns work !!!
