best ISP provider?

i will only use the internet the odd evening and some weekends. i imagine i won't get the use of it to pay a monthly fee. a pay as you use service would probably be best. i would just like to know which internet provider is best for my needs? which one is the cheapest and most efficient?

The best answer I can think of here is, how long is a piece of string? I was with Telewest and they were useless, but I hear others calling them the best. Id sign up to one or two of the mainstream ISP's and after a month see who is the best one and take off the other.
