ok guys your always helpful here so what do you recomend as the best backup software. as i've just purchased a new dual format dvd recorder i will now be able to back up to a single dvd + partition on one of the hard drives so which one do i choose? Acronis, NTI,Powerquest or any others, cost is not a problem. thought norton might also do one but seems to be part of systemworks and really don't like that but do use their personal firewall / antivirus 2004. running xp pro, 1.5gig ram, xp3200 cpu, 4 x 200gig hard drives.

Symantec Ghost would be my favourite for a complete system backup.

click here for a good guide to backing up.

Or Drive Image 7 (which is now owned by Symantec)

I realised I did not really appreciate the true meaning (and power) of "Disk Imaging" as a backup method until I browse through one of the article which appears in the website click here introduced by Diodorus Siculus.

Disk imaging tool (PowerQuest "Drive Image", Acronis "True Image", Norton "Ghost") is like a photocopy machine --> If the harddisk has been cleaned of junk files and defragmented before making a disk image, then it would be restored to this EXACTLY same beautiful state (no junk files and no fragmentation) in the unfortunate event of a disaster !

True Image is rated very highly in reviews. Can be downloaded for 15 day free trial

has just come across a thread whereby someone is asking for recommendation on a backup/restore program. i think this old thread might still be useful for the issue raised.

again, the 3 types of harddisk backup according to this website click here are :

1. Disk Imaging (Most Powerful)

PowerQuest "Drive Image" -> Taken over by Symantec in Dec 2003 click here

Acronis "True Image" click here

Symantec "Norton Ghost" click here

2. Files Backup (Powerful)

Dantz "Retrospect Professional" click here

Novosoft "Handy Backup" click here

3. System Restore (Adequate but Not Fool-Proof)

Windows ME/XP "System Restore"

Symantec "Norton GoBack" click here
