Belkin Notebook Network Adaptor

I have a Belkin Notebook Network Adaptor Card plugged into my XP laptop. It is detecting a secure wi-fi network from a house over the road, but won't detect my own wi-fi network from the router less that 3 feet away!! I have uninstalled and re-installed the driver and Belkin software, but still no difference. Is it something to do with the setup? Any ideas anyone?

Just for starters,in wireless settings on your router page, make sure these are checked.
Enable Wireless Access Point
Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)
