being shutdown when online

  covers 20:23 10 Sep 03

A friend recently started having this problem. windows xp.
After about 3-5 minutes online get message:

"generic host process for W32 has encountered a problem and needs to close".

We thought it was Norton Anti-Virus which she bought and only installed after having it in the box for a year but now uninstalled but still happening.

A previous message prior to it shutting itself down mentioned "a hardware device"

Thanks for all help.

Go to Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager,

You will see a list of the hardware, are there any ! against a device, if so right click on the device and see the status of the device, and post back....

Could also be the "Blaster" worm, this gives a similar message. j.

I've brought this over for you, just in case you are not sure how to do it. j.

previous query on 10 September. To add a new strange phenomenon. The lady in question usually gets about 2-3 e-mails a week. Now she is getting about 20 a minute. Over 1000 last count. Stuart
