So long since I had this sort of problem that I am not sure where to start. I left the pc running and when I returned screen showed xp start up but there was a regular single beep. Suggestions please

Will it boot at all?

Regular beeps once past the POST usually are an overheat warning,

try clearing all the dust and grime from the innards and check fans are running OK.

Thanks it will not boot up. I have cleared a lot of fluff and dirt and the fans are running. it is a long beep about every 5 seconds for about 10 seconds.

From your description I would suspect memory

try removing one stick at a time

or even just a remove and refit may solve the problem.
