beep on POST/freezing

  gsculp 09:07 19 Jun 07

I often get continuous 5sec beeps seperated by 2/3 secs on powering up. This continues until the power is turned off by pressing power button for 5secs or using on/off switch (haven't let it continue for more than 20secs). Upon powering up next time it usually starts up OK.
The pc often stalls/freezes (usually while using Internet Explorer/Outlook Express but can be restarted using RESET button.

System (built locally by firm no longer around!!) described by Belarc Advisor as

OS XP Home (SP2)
CPU 2.55GhZ Intel Celeron
MOBO RC410SB400 (MSI/PCI Express??)
RAM Infineon 512mb SDRAM
BIOS Phoenix Technologies LTD 6.00 PG 09/23/2005

Have looked on forum/WEB with little success as I have so little info on system components. Any advise/help/links would be much appreciated.

Since it appears you have a Phoenix BIOS then the first link from FatboySlim71 should provide your answer.
You need to look at the beep codes for the Phoenix BIOS.

It's probably the RAM - long beeps usually indicate a memory problem and random freezes are a common symptom of it as well.

Have tried the Phoenix site but their beep code does not seem to mention 5sec beeps seperated by pause.

Have used "MEMTEST" to check RAM and let it run for several hours but it reported that no fault could be found. Is "MEMTEST" reliable?

Will not be able to log onto 'net with faulty PC until tomorrow to check PC with other sites. Using spare laptop at present.

But thanks fellas.
