B/B 500mb to 1Gb upgrade - worth it?

  Halmer 19:32 11 Mar 05

Pipex have mailed me telling me that they will upgrade me in the summer automatically or for £15 now.

Just wondered if I would notice much difference on Pentium 2 733MHZ 384RAM?

Personally why pay when you can get it 4 free in a few months

You won't see that much difference, wait till summer.

I've just been upgraded to 1MB and to be truthful surfing the web is not noticeably faster. Downloads are faster but I usually have a coffee when downloading so it makes little difference.

When I changed from 512Mb to 1Gb I did notice a significant speed up, not double but say about 1.5 times. The way things are going with broadband speeds I think £15 is a bit steep as BT for instance is upgrading its customers from 512Kb to 1Mb and from 1Mb t0 2Mb for free. Unless you are very keen for extra speed I would hang on until Pipex succumb to market forces.

I have just gone up to 2 mbps with Bt and I cant say that there is much difference between this and my first 500kbps BB. Maybe if I was downloading lots of stuff it would be noticeable. I do find sending photo files much quicker though.

the £15 is a one off payment now and the monthly tariff remains the same.

The £15 is only payable if you don't wish to wait, they are slowly beginning the upgrade process now which will be available to all Pipex users by August for free. Myself well I'm waiting.

It depends what you are using the speed for if its just web surfing then 512 is plenty,if you download lots of things or play online games then either 1Mb or 2Mb would be better.
