Battery shutdown

Sometimes when I am running my laptop on battery only, the computer will shut off after only 5 minutes. It cannot be re-started. I have to go back to AC power to start the computer again. The power icon showed that there was 94% battery capacity left at the time of shutdown. The battery is completely discharged. It's like something is shorting out the battery, but it doesn't happen every time I use battery power.

How old is the battery and what type is it? Some have a 'memory effect' which can confuse the laptop voltage monitor.

If it's a Li ion, and two years old or more it's come to end of life.

Always make sure batteries are practicaly completely discharged, otherwise Li ion will count any connection to the mains as a full charge, and they are limited by iternal circuitry of the battery to about 600 . or two to three years max.
