Battery problem?

At boot up I get a message saying the voltage is low in my system battery and I am told to press F1 to continue. Is this a dying battery or is the message caused by some other fault? Computer is Dell 8300 on XP

...They're cheap enough. Buy one and replace it. You'll need a CR 2032 lithium cell. Open up the case and find the old battery. Lever it up gently with a small screwdriver and replace it.
