Barney Actimates - No midi port

Since the birth of my 3rd & 4th daughters I have bought a new computer which does not have a midi port. I wish to run our old Actimates Barney on the PC with XP. When the software (which I tried first) is activated it says I do not have a midi port.
The plug on the transmitter for the midi port is a two tier 15 pin one. I have found somewhere where I can purchase a 15 pin/ USB converter at a price. My problem is that if I use the converter will my software recognise or will it only work with a specific midi port?

Can any one please offer some advise or possible solution?

Thank you.

I've recently bought a USB to serial converter.

All that was required to set it up was to install some recognition software, plug in the USB connector, let the computer find the thing, load it and that's all. It works fine. I imagine a midi prot converter would be very similar.

My converter was from Scan and was very low cost.
