What are you using to do backups ie Acronis,Norton Ghost, xxclone etc?

  Green Army 16:48 17 Jun 07

windows built in backup utility

unfortunately it does not work that way. without a windows operating system installed there is no connection software to talk to the external device.

Does the external HD show up is computer management?

If You created it with windows, As above you need to restore the Operating System first then you can restore the backup. You should have used Acronis True Image to do it from Boot
