backup & restore problem

  stileguru 20:22 11 Jul 07

Recently had to re-install Windows XP after major PC failure. Luckily had backups so got everything back eventtually. However my first attempt to restore my data created a 'Documents and Settings' folder hierarchy on my external Firewire drive (F:) which, no matter how hard I tried, could not be accessed by anyone on my PC (message "Access Denied"). I also could not delete, rename, or move it. I would delete it in DOS if I could gain access to the firewire device in DOS. Anyone have a solution to how i can delete this folder?

Have you tried doing this in safe mode?

If ur using XP professional the do the following if Home edition the restart into safe mode before you do this.

1) right click the folder
2) Properties
3) Security tab
4) Then click Advanced
5) Owner tab
6) Change the owner in here
7) then OK
8) Delete all username references back in the permissions tab
9) then add
10) Type "Everyone" and select OK
11) Give the new user full control
12) Tick as appropriate to apply the permissions to all sub folders near the bottom of this window.
13) OK
