Backup Questions!

  Taw 18:31 02 Jul 03

Forgive the innocence of this question, but Im sure myself and a lot of others will benfit from your very good advice. (Win XP home)
1. When? 2. How? 3. What files? 4. Where to?
4. How many copies? 5. Do I need other software?
6. Is it easy?
If something else comes to mind I will add a response.

Thanking you in advance.

It is normal to employ a grandfather/father/son idea in backups.

To give you an idea of how the company I work for does things:

M-T do an incremental backup (so only the files that have changed)

Friday - full backup of all files.

Last friday in the month - full backup.

There is a different set of backup tapes used for each series so we can go back ages to get things should it be needed.

You have the choice to backup to another hard drive/CDRW/external hard drive or tape. Another hard drive is fine unless your house burns down or your PC is stolen. Best plan is to keep a backup "off site".

You could use WinXP backup if available as shown in VoGs link.

Yes its very easy.

I use a similar procedure to Sir R even though I'm only on home computers.

If it seems to you to be overkill, take it from me, it isn't. There is no feeling quite like the sinking feeling you get when you come to your computer one day and it's dead, cannot be revived and you have no other records of the things you had on it. It happened to me once many, many years ago and I resolved at the time - NEVER again!!
