Backup complete disk to external hard drive

I am new to computing (took it up when I retired!) and am not sure how to back up the entire system onto an external hard drive. I want to be able to boot from the external drive if main drive fails. Any suggestions would be appreciated

My preference would be for Norton Ghost: click here for a guide.

You would NOT be able to boot from the external drive. USB and Firewire will not be recognised until Windows loads but if your main drive has failed, no Windows.

smokingbeagle - it is possible to boot from a USB device.
