Copying of games, for any reason, is illegal in this country.

Typically, the public looks to the Fair Use Act and the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 to define their rights. Though open to interpretation, in a nutshell, these Acts say that you may legally make a copy for personal backup purposes, if you were the one who bought (and still own) the original.

text taken from link, but to copy games is one thing to play is another, if you do want to play copied games you will need to install a mod chip into your Xbox which is a bit like trying to touch your left elbow with your left hand

What do you mean by back up games. Do you mean backup saved games or the actual game cds.

i want to backup up my optical games disk such that, if i damage my original optical disk i can run straight from the backup optical disk... ie i want to create a mirror image copy that will run on the xbox.

"you will need to install a mod chip into your Xbox"

Which is also illegal anyway.
