I am about to buy a laptop running W7 and it is pre-installed. Can anyone tell me how to back up the system to DVD in case of emergencies.

There should be a function in the start menu to do a one time back up.

Aother way is to use disk imaging software to clone your drive to anoter using something like Acronis True Image

Free software to do it click here
However i do recommend paying for Acronis worth its weight in gold.

It depends on the make of laptop.

I did a HP pc for someone and needed 4 DVD-R's

3 were needed for the 'Recovery Image' (back to factory fresh) and 1 was for a 'W7 Repair' DVD I just followed the instructions on the Start menu to burn them.

Not top mention dvd's are not really a safe media

I agree, no way to test them until you use them.
I prefer AcronisTI and store on separate HDD and also make more than just one backup image.
