Backing up my laptop using XP

After owning my laptop for a couple of years I decided I should back up the contents of my hard drive. I did this using the option through Windows XP. I backed the data up to an external hard drive. This was all fine but XP tells me that I must have a floppy disc to make a bootable copy. I have neither a floppy drive or a disc. As I only have a DVD/CD rom drive. Is there another way to launch the data store on my external drive??

The only way I can see to do this. Is download Acronis, With this you can recover your system, using their secure zone and F11.Then download your copy or the copy you can produce from Acronis, from your ext HD. Hope you can understand this. Aine.
