Backing up to DVD

I am running XP home edition and have installed the Back up program from the Windows CD. My DVD drive is a LG Super Multi DVD Drive GSA4081B which should recognise almost all types of CD and DVD but when I try to back up to a DVD-R (my only supply at present) it doesn't work. In the end I created a back up folder on a spare partition on my hard drive and backed up to this then copied this file to a CD-R which was recognised.
In "My Computer" the DVD drive is showing as DVD-RAM drive. Should I remove DVD Ramdriver using the add remove software facility in Control Panel?
I seem to be able to back up DVDs using Nero Express and DVD-Rs with no problems, so I'm somewhat confused.

XPs burner only works with CDs and not DVDs.

You have to use Nero or similar
