My computer recently died - motherboard gave out. I am trying to access the Inbox of Outlook Express - the files are there but the file ending .dbx was not recognised - how can I restore these files?

Thanks but that does not help as the backup is saved to external harddrive

The same applies but you point the import requester to the folder on the external drive. Actually the folder one above your OE one, if you go to the very last folder OE won't import it.

Thanks - but meantime I have mucked things up in that I changed programme to open to Access and now cannot change back to original

Can anyone help me undo my stupidity?

You mean file associations? dbx files can only be imported, the association is irrelevant.
Try a system restore.
