Back-up and Mirroring

I have a laptop with a 60Gig hard drive and I use 250Gig Lacie External Hard drive and Acronis True Image for backing up. My problem is that I just don’t like having the files stored as a ‘back-up’ file on the Lacie and I’d be much happier, if the Lacie ‘mirrored’ exactly everything that happened on my laptop. If I ever had a problem with my laptop, I could then choose which files to transfer onto a new machine from my Lacie. Also, I don’t always remember to run the back ups at night, hence why I really like the idea of constant mirroring.

My questions are:
1) is there any good freeware software that can arrange the mirroring and is it simple to set up?
2) Are there any real negatives with this? ie. I’ve heard that Mirroring can really slow your machine down
3) Is there a better way to protect my data? Ie. can I still back-up to the Lacie, but back-up so that the Lacie holds an exact copy of my files rather than just one ‘back-up’ file.
