Back up - internal or external drive

I have an AMD 64 socket 939 system, with a DVD writer and one Maxtor DiamondMax 10 200gb hard drive. I am considering adding a second internal drive, likely to cost about £60 if I install it myself ( a bit apprehensive but I have done pretty well every other installation on my previous computers) or possibly avoid that complication and buy an external drive such as the Maxtor One Touch likley to cost about double that.

Any ideas on the advantages/disadvantages of either route?

An external, via USB / Firewire will be pretty quick and has the added advantage being able to be taken to another PC easily.
