avoiding trojan

Hi all, I have found recently that my computer is being regularly infected by a Trojan Win32. downloader.gen

My operating system is WinXp and I mostly use Monzilla Firefox Browser. The Tool Bar has Add-ons Web of Trust and Webutation. All the Web Sites I generally use most have all high safety ratings.

The Trojan was found by running Spybot Search & Destroy. I also run Microsoft Security Essentials. This is supposed to have a real time scanner but did not pick up any infection in real time.

Can anyone assist me on how to find which site is the culprit?

Regards scorrie

It would appear that you might have a 'false/positive' if one security programme is picking it up and another isn't.

If you put "trojan win 32.gen" in a Google search, you should find many answers for possible removal or correction to the problem. I have just done this check, and there are far to many solutions to suggest.

The info and screenshot instructions (using free programs) on http://malwaretips.com/blogs/win32-downloader-gen-trojan/ seems as good a place as any to follow removal instructions.

Also you can install the free program SpywareBlaster to help block further threats. It is free if you do manual updates (don't install the Autoupdate as you have to pay for that) Read the FAQ for info http://www.brightfort.com/spywareblaster.html#FAQ

Does it tell you which file is infected?

Scan your system with MalwareBytes. There is a free edition for home users. And make sure your system has all the latest updates (eg. service packs)

hi all who replyed.

I havs taken onboard what has been said. Changing spy bot for Malwarebytes seems a god idea. The trojan has been removed but my post was how to find where it came from?

Regards pulteny.

Infected website. Dont click on any links that you dont know, run Malwarebytes every day and if it finds it then look in your history and see where you have been.

Going back on the subject of false/positive, you are most likely to find this if you use an whole host of anti wears. A number of years ago I learnt my lesson and got far less paranoid by removing all the anti and security wares and going for only one of each. I use SuperAntiSpyware, and find that sorted my needs?.

And I use Avast free Anti-Virus nothing else, only windows Firewall and Router Firewall
