I read somewhere that disabling the avnotify file (this gets mention on your link) can indeed stop you getting notified regarding some virus warnings etc.

Personally I don't find it a problem having to click on close when the upgrade to premium screen appears, at the end of the day the program is free and the program makers are only naturally going to try to get people to upgrade (pay) for the premium version. If a lot of people upgrade due to the nag screen, then it has been a worthwhile addition from the program makers point of view : )

Well, it certainly solves the problem of getting the definitions updated. I can now get an instant response whereas previously it was nigh impossible to get a server to respond.

So I'm happy.
