Irun the free version of avg when i try to update it it says an internet connection could no be established even though i am online any ideas please

I find this happens to myself (Win xp & Ie6)If Im on line prior to the update attempt..However if I want to update from the Xp drive I do it before going on line (the program dials itself).Where-as the W98 drive(Ie5) is ok either way I choose when updating.

Make sure your firewall is not blocking access to the internet for AVG.

You often need several attempts to download updates, especially in the period just after a new one has been released.

I get this often, and usually after I've seen an update posting here! As Stuartli says, you just need to be patient and keep trying!

Why not go to their web site, you can dowload any updates from there if any, I do this if I have connection problems with the update manager.
