avg uninstall has warped xp startup/system restore

I had avg for a while and on the advice of another user decided to try avast. When I uninstalled avg the computer load up screen upon restart has gone haywire. The blue dell logo is half off the screen and not centred and the xp load up bar has disappeared off screen to the right almost completely.

I could live with this however I tried a system restore and each time it failed.

Any thoughts on what has occurred?

Thanks.

Thanks, I tried the scannow. It went through ok but hasn't fixed it.

I have disabled and re-enabled system restore which seems to have sorted sys restore but I've lost all my previous restore points.

Thanks for you tip though!
