I'm moving from using Outlook Express to Thunderbird. Will AVG still check my incoming and outgoing mail OK or will I have to change any of the settings? Thanks for your help in advance.

I don't know about AVG, but Avast and Thunderbird work well together.

Here's an explanation of how to get the email scanner working - from AVG technical support. TC

Please, download the latest installation of the AVG 7.0 program and run it. Then go to the Add/Remove components and here add a tick to the component : personal email scanner. Then continue and finish the setup.
There will be automatically added two automatic servers scanning all the traffic at 110 and 25 ports - no matter what email client used. Best regards, Oldrich Muller AVG Technical Support
