You can change your current Ewido to the new AVG if you want.

ewido anti-spyware 4.0 will now continue under the new product name AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 contains the same ewido technology, but with some further enhanced features:

Highly improved cleaning
Lower resource usage
Additional languages supported

I am using the Ewido version 4.0.0.172 free. Will the new AVG version overwrite or would a un-install/ re-install be required, so as to bring the system up to date?.

Uninstall then install the new AVG Version. The upside is you get another 30 days of the full version free.

The actual takeover occurred a while back.

Is there still a free version after 30 days. nothing came up when i checked for updates, did not want to delete till i was sure it was still free after 30 days with the usaual two ticks taken out for live updates and live protection.

Yes, it just reverts back to the free version just the same as Ewido.
