AVG stopping xp booting up

Parents computer suffered a power surge and had a new mobo and processor fitted tech guy also said he'd installed AVG aswell.
This didn't bother me as it previously had AVG on it anyway.
Aftera week or so the pc began to fail to boot up. It would get so far (to the first splash screen) then start the boot up process at the begining and so on ad infinitum.
After a process of elimination it was discovered that restoring the pc to a point before updating AVG it booted up fine. Weird!
Can anybody suggest why this would happen and what to do about it? At the moment I have turned off the automatic update facility on AVG to allow the pc to be used, this is obviously not a state I want to leave the computer in for long.

What if you uninstall avg,There is a new version out now 7.5,If you uninstall Run C Cleaner then Reinstal,That may sort it out.
