this morning i found that the component status could not be detected-connection failed.the icon is greyed out in taskbar and right clicking won't shut it down either.AVG comes on and i managed to update it earlier on ( but from start menu as clicking the icon is a waste of time).after rebooting twice and hours of searching i finally decided to uninstall ( from add/remove)but i got error message and it wouldn't uninstall.so i tried to in safe mode and i'm still getting the same message 'action failed for file set up.exe creating back up.access denied (5)%DESTINATION%=C:/program files blah blah blah

so basically i've come in here with no AV and i'm not happy

Glad your sorted there is in the options besides install and repair, an uninstall option which may be a better way of removeing avg8, hopefully you won't need that.
