AVG-cleaning virus

  Jai 13:40 30 Jan 04

My neighbour (& me) run AVG. After the last run
he has 11 virus's listed but it won't clean or delete them. I asked for a list but so far all I have got back from him is "a load of numbers ending in .dat". Has anyone heard of this?

If he is running ME or XP they could be stuck in restore points.

You need to turn off System Restore, scan to be sure they're gone, then re-enable SR. click here

Thanks VoG

Printed out the page for him. Why does turning off SR remove these files (as a matter of interest) - or don't I need to know!!!!!

Speaking of SR on my old ME machine out of 6gb I had nearly 3Gb of archive files which I couldn't
delete thru normal means. I ended up booting from
floppy & using DOS commands to delete them, worked a treat!!

If you turn off System Restore, Windows deletes all the restore points -> viruses gone.

Ta - again as a matter of interest.

Is there another way of deleting the very, very old archive files which fill up your disk, if you haven't set the storage space to minimum?

disk clean up/more options/system restore cleans up all but the last restore point.

cleanup click here gets rid of lots of other junk.
