I have loaded the free avast home edition anti virus checker and can not get it to connect to the internet to update the vius database.
I have told the firewall to accept requests from the software to allow access to the internet but that does not seem to have made any difference.
Has any one got any idea's

If you open Avast and then go to do a manual update of the virus database what happens? You should get either an error message or confirmation that the database is up to date or has been updated.

It may be worth downloading the program again and re-installing in case it`s a corupt download in the first place.

What firewall are you using ?
Also if avast! fails in its attempts to update, you should get a red failure notification pop-up, have you seen this ?
