Avast and update error

I'm receiving a message that says I must update my software, and when I try to update I get an error message, the icon is still appearing in the bottom right hand corner but all it does say is "initialising, trying to update".

I thought the best thing would be to delete it completely and reinstall, but it won't allow me to do this either. I get an error message saying "error reading product data from c/programmes/avast software/avast/set up - set up cannot continue.

Can anyone help as at the moment I am concerned I am not protected.

One of my laptops did something similar with Avast I uninstalled it and installed Microsoft Security Essentials instead

Lots of people seem to be having problems with Avast at this time

Cheers HC

  1. Download the latest version of Avast but do not install yet

  2. Download aswclear.exe on your desktop

  3. Start Windows in Safe Mode
  4. Open (execute) the uninstall utility
  5. If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
  6. Click REMOVE
  7. Restart your computer

  8. Install the latest version of Avast

Many thanks Fruit Bat, with your instructions I've managed to uninstall. I've gone back to using AVG until the trial version runs out - is there still a free version?
