Avast has stopped, cannot be restarted or fixed

Title says it all really - boot up the PC and I have a red cross on the avast symbol in the tray at the bottom of the screen, click this or avast desktop icon and avast page says "program has been stopped or is in an inconsistent state" Clicking either the Fix or Restart buttons on this page produces no effect. Should I just uninstall this and reinstall a fresh download? Any ideas what has caused this?
Thanks for your ideas.

Suggest:

1) System Restore

2) Uninstall using click here and re-install

Download Free Avast 5 then Uninstall old Avast and reload 5

I used the uninstall link that Clapton is God suggested - have uninstalled, then reinstalled a new copy of Avast 5 and everything seems OK now. But wondered what caused it to fall to bits in the first place.
Anyway, thanks for your help

I would advise running a series of anti-virus and anti-malware checks. Also check for boot sector viruses.
