i have just started using avast anti virus can anyone tell me if there is a way to program a scan to run every night or do you have to scan manually thanks leo

Not with the home version - only the professional.

It continually monitors files as they are opened / accessed / created so there is no real need to run each day - do a scan upon installation and then on occasion.

But it does have avast screen saver, that will scan the PC while it's idle.
Settings / Control Panel / Display properties. Screen Saver tab and select the avast antivirus option. Use settings to fine tune it.
