AV problems after XP SP1 install

You may have noticed my earlier thread re: problems with XP after XP SP1 install, now I'm having problems with my AV software. In essence I'm using McAfee AV and am getting a warning message terlling me that its files have been tampered with and I must reinstall from the cd. This I've done and now along with that message I'm also being told that basically every programme on my pc is infected. I've tried completely unistalling Mcafee and reinstalling but whilst doing the latter I'm told that the previous install still exisits and the new install cannot proceed. Anyone know of a good programme that will eradicate Mcafee completely to allow a clean install of this or any other AV software?
