Automatically checking search engine position

I have been asked to report monthly on the position our website achieves in a number of the major search engines. Is there any software/websites that could do this automatically or a way I can create a piece of code (VB/VBA or other) that could automatically do this each day and provide figures I could average at month-end?

and ranking applications that will do the job for you.

One that I've used in the past is called Search engine Commando
click here it will track your site's position in all the major engine rankings and submit detailed and regular reports - precisely what you want.

It also promises to help drive traffic to your site by automatically submitting your pages to the major engines on a regular basis - but that's another matter altogether.

I am currently evaluating the trial version and it does look exactly like the sort of thing I was after.
