Automatic Updates - constantly disabling itself.

Just installed XP Pro SP1.

Attempting to run WU I am informed that I need to install BITS, Win Installer 3.1, hwich I do, and am told they are installed.

However, they do not appear in Add/Remove Programs, AND when I look in Services, AU has been disable, even though I repeatedly select Automatic.

Additionally, click here & click here (plus others) wil not run from the address line in IE, but they will open from 'Favourites'!.

Additionall (!!), I cannot get NIS to install.

I have been to the KB, tried all the reg dll entries..

When I type in 'regedit', it appears on screen for a bout 3 seconds beofre disappearing!

Much help required.

try sfc /scannow in the run box. This command checks the files are correct and not corrupt within windows. have a read of these 2 threads as well.
